Az-Azeytun Empeltre is born in Batea, in the heart of the Terra Alta, and comes here in a 250 ml bottle made to sit within easy reach at the table. It is a young extra virgin olive oil with character, made from the olives of monumental trees and obtained solely by mechanical means.

Behind it is Abel Maijó, from a farming family, who learned from his grandfather how to work the land, the vines and the olive trees. That inherited craft shows in a fresh oil of green grass and artichoke, with gentle bitterness and pepperiness and a sweetness that leads on the palate.

How it tastes

Nose

Light green grass, with fresh nuances of fennel and artichoke, like a vegetable garden in spring.

Palate

Gentle bitterness and pepperiness with no sharp edges, and a sweetness that takes over and rounds off the whole experience.

Finish

Clean and friendly, with the sweetness still present and a green memory that invites another spoonful.

Batea, Terra Alta: where Az-Azeytun Empeltre comes from

Az-Azeytun was born in Batea, in the Terra Alta district of the Terres de l’Ebre in Catalonia. Abel Maijó studied viticulture before devoting himself to his own oil, and from his grandfather he inherited a respect for the land, the vines and the olive tree.

The Empeltre behind this oil comes from monumental olive trees that time has turned into a landscape. With the area’s own varieties and purely mechanical work, the result is a young oil with personality and very clear roots.

Where it shines in the kitchen

  • Bread with tomato, with a generous drizzle just before serving.
  • Seasonal salads and chargrilled vegetables.
  • Rice dishes, added at the end to keep its freshness.
  • Mediterranean fish, grilled or baked.
  • A simple piece of toast, to taste the oil with nothing to hide it.

Why Az-Azeytun Empeltre in a 250 ml bottle

Az-Azeytun Empeltre, 250 ml bottle

The 250 ml bottle is the format of curiosity: it fits in any corner of the kitchen, pours comfortably at the table and is finished while the oil is still at its best. It is a good choice for trying the oil for the first time, or for giving as a gift.

The glass protects the oil. Once opened, close it tightly and keep it away from light and heat.

Az-Azeytun is born in Batea, in the Terra Alta, in the Terres de l'Ebre. Behind it is Abel Maijó, son of a farming family, who learned from his grandfather to work the land, the vines and the olive trees, and studied viticulture before devoting himself to his own oil.

He works the local varieties, such as Arbequina and Oliana, a recent variety that in the Terra Alta gives notes of almond, walnut, artichoke, fennel and tomato. A young oil with character, the kind we like to keep close in Mataró.
